Crime scene officers captured the attention of several Cub Scouts last week when they led a lesson in crime scene investigation for members of Bear Pack 93 and 318 at Patrol Headquarters in LaPlace.
Fingerprints and DNA play a key role in solving crimes and catching bad guys, Deputy Jenni Estraca told the third graders. She explained that DNA is a material that determines all the characteristics of a living thing. And, by testing DNA found in a person’s cells, police can solve a crime.
Lifting fingerprints and crime scene witness games were among the fun activities. Evidence preservation and scene sketching/recording also were discussed. Deputy Ronald Brown demonstrated the SJSO drones and talked about how they aid officers in investigations. The children also enjoyed seeing crime scene vehicles and the Bear Cat, an armored vehicle used to transport SWAT.
