Sheriff Mike Tregre had the pleasure of presenting J’Nyiah Sorapuru with the 2021-22 academic scholarship from the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Scholarship Program.
J’Nyiah, a 2021 graduate of West St. John High School in Edgard, plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to study psychology. She is the daughter of Clarence and Jacqueline Sorapuru of Mt. Airy. She will receive $500 for educational expenses.
Several applications were received from graduating seniors attending all St. John Parish high schools. Qualities such as academic achievement, leadership, and character are considered. Applications were reviewed by an impartial board, and the board then submitted its recommendations to Sheriff Tregre. Applicants must be a permanent resident of Louisiana, use the scholarship for higher education within the state, and be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student.
The Louisiana Sheriffs’ Educational Scholarship Program awards $500 to graduating high school students in parishes where the sheriffs are members of the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Honorary Membership Program. Funding for the scholarship is made possible through the support of St. John the Baptist Parish’s honorary members.
