Sheriff Mike Tregre joined Corrections officers with the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office in sending well wishes to Mrs. Sheila Louper who recently retired from teaching at South Central Louisiana Technical College in Reserve.
Through a partnership between the SJSO and the technical college, Mrs. Louper served as a General Educational Development teacher for inmates in the Sherman Walker Correctional Facility. An educator for 50 years, Mrs. Louper was a GED teacher for St. John inmates for 13 years. Sheriff Tregre and Corrections officers presented Mrs. Louper with a SJSO blanket June 23, 2020.
Sheriff Tregre and Corrections officers thanked Mrs. Louper for her dedicated service to the SJSO Corrections Division. Over the years, Mrs. Louper has taught hundreds of inmates, enabling them to earn a general equivalency high school diploma.
Wanting to learn more about the SJSO, Mrs. Louper also is a 2018 graduate of the SJSO’s Citizens Academy.
Sheriff Tregre said he proud of the work Mrs. Louper has accomplished with inmates. Providing educational programs such as GED improves public safety and reduces recidivism since inmates who earn a high school diploma equivalency are less likely to relapse into criminal behavior and incarceration, he said.
“We thank you, Mrs. Louper, for helping us change lives for the better in St. John Parish,” Sheriff Tregre said. “Mrs. Louper has been an outstanding public servant.”
