On Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at 7:19 pm, a 28-year-old female was at the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office Sherman Walker Correctional Center wearing wet clothing and only one flip-flop to report that her ex-boyfriend, Cory Hebert, 34, had beaten her. The victim had sustained cuts, bruises, and superficial scratches to face, neck, hands, arms, and upper torso.
She told deputies that she and Hebert were together twelve years but separated for the past several months. After spending the afternoon together in the city, she and Hebert got into an argument as they exited I-10 at Highway US 51. Hebert drove north on Highway US 51 to a remote area. The victim told investigators that Hebert punched her and cut her with a knife. He dragged her by the hair out of the truck and threw her cell phone in the water. She said that she tried to get away by jumping in the water, but he followed her and dragged her by the arm out of the water and back into the truck.
As Hebert drove toward LaPlace, the victim told Hebert that she was going to report the incident to the Sheriff’s Office. Hebert drove her to the Sherman Walker Correctional Center where she exited the truck, and he drove off. She reported the incident to deputies and refused medical treatment.
911 dispatchers received a call from a person who identified himself as Cory Hebert. He told dispatchers that if deputies came for him, they had better come heavily armed. After receiving the threat from Hebert, deputies talked by phone to Hebert nearly an hour to calm him and have him meet with deputies, but Hebert refused. He told deputies that he was waiting for them with a loaded shotgun.
Through the course of the investigation, investigators learned that Hebert was now driving the victim’s car identified as a Chrysler 300. Deputies located the vehicle matching the victim’s car at the intersection of Highway US 61 and Belle Terre Boulevard in LaPlace. When deputies attempted to stop the driver of the car, the driver fled at a high rate of speed south on Highway US 61 refusing to stop. Hebert led a pursuit through St. Charles Parish into Kenner.
Detectives applied for and obtained an judicial court ordered arrest warrant for Cory Hebert for aggravated battery, false imprisonment; armed with a dangerous weapon, simple kidnapping, aggravated flight from an officer, and unauthorized use of a movable. Hebert remains in custody in Jefferson Parish. Upon his release there, Hebert will be transferred and booked on the listed charges in St. John the Baptist Parish.
The two St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies that were injured were treated and released from the hospital.
