Release of Sept 23, 2014
On Sunday, September 21, 2014, at 4:08 am, St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the report

KENNETH HAYES

of an armed robbery of the store, Birdie’s, at 483 Belle Terre Boulevard in LaPlace. The caller told 911 operators that two perpetrators fled the scene in a black Jeep Grand Cherokee heading north on Belle Terre Boulevard toward I-10, and they were both armed with handguns.

Responding deputies positioned on I-10 eastbound at the exit for Highway US 51 saw the vehicle and attempted to stop the driver of the Jeep, but the driver refused to stop and continued driving eastbound on I-10. A computer check of the license plate on the Jeep revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen in Orleans Parish earlier in the day, and the subjects were armed and considered dangerous. The pursuit ended in Metairie at Causeway Boulevard when the driver crashed into a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol unit. The driver of the Jeep was arrested, but the passenger fled from the Jeep prior to the crash.

The victims of the armed robbery told investigators that two male subjects entered the store. The first armed subject went behind the counter, pointed a gun at the cashier, and demanded all the money from the registers and the cashier’s personal money. The cashier complied with his demands. The second armed subject went to the rear of the store and returned to the front of the store with a second employee who was ordered to lay on the floor. Both perpetrators fled the store with an undisclosed amount of money.

Investigators identified one perpetrator as Kenneth Hayes, 17, of New Orleans. Hayes, the driver of the Jeep, was arrested on charges for Jefferson Parish. St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Hayes in St. John the Baptist Parish for armed robbery with a firearm.
